I would hope that anyone reading this shares my continuing appreciation of Mike Latham & Company's craftsmanship. Mike and the rest at Sega Interactive Development Division (SIDD) have produced a challenging must- have game for the Sega CD under Sega's over-the-top DEEP WATER label. With Vendetta moves, Sudden Deaths and Cinekills joining the already devastating Overkills there are now many different ways to finish off an opponent. With the addition of four more playable characters (for a total of 13!) and the unbelievable 11 hidden characters (including the Eternal and Dark Champions), Sega has more than adequately addressed the previously raised (by critics) 'problem' of there not being enough players. Lastly, the addition of built-in Combo moves, Skill moves inherent to each player's fighting style that do not require the use of Inner Strength and the enhanced player control caused by eliminating terminally eternal charge times for most Special Moves, creates a potent force of warriors who can stand their ground against the computer. The CinePak visuals are awesome! There are four for each of the starting 13 characters: Intro, Win, Lose and Cinekill. Sadly, however, while many and most of the changes in EC:CDS over the original greatly improve the playability of the game there are still a few problems. The game continues to cheat, though not as much. The CPU can still run certain combinations of attacks that are absolutely impossible to duplicate by human beings no matter how much Inner Strength they have or what speed setting you are playing at (especially with LARCEN). The most blatant computer cheat is the same one Zangief always did in SF2 - blocking before you even press an attack button! The computer also regains Inner Strength MUCH faster than should be possible. Sure, Sega calls it Dynamic Play Adjustment - but it still looks like cheating to me. Instead of being improved, the Instant Replay and Practice Room options have been removed. Some power moves have been made harder to do and certain one button attacks have been removed or re-animated (BLADE, SLASH and MIDKNIGHT most obviously). Other special attacks have been removed entirely (R.A.X. and TRIDENT). Worst of all, there are numerous inaccuracies in the otherwise well done game manual. There are screen shots and descriptions of option screens that do not exist, the wrong instructions are given for several Special and Skill moves, many power moves have no instructions at all (even those that were carried over from the previous version of the game) and at least one was not mentioned at all (DAWSON's Hat Trick). All those complaints are basically ticky-tack, since nothing is overly hard to discover on your own. However, the game's credits list about a trillion people who worked with Sega and SIDD to test the game and still there are some glitches. RAVEN can jump behind any stunned or dizzied character and simply jump-kick them to death, (just keep pressing 'C') since they keep falling backward into her next attack. DAWSON's Snake Belt Grab will freeze the system if he does it to MIDKNIGHT during his Flying Wall Smash. The system will crash if R.A.X. does too many (2 or 3) Turbine maneuvers in a row (if you wait long enough it might come back - maybe). It is hard to believe I am the only one who has encountered these all-too-real problems. Despite all of that, I have really enjoyed playing this game, and have done so with my friends for hours on end. As a result, I found the following hidden characters CRISPY (1967 AD), BLAST (1955 AD), CHIN WO (1815 AD), ZUNI (1902 AD) and the ETERNAL (Two incarnations) on my own. Though I had played for hours (days, weeks...) and done quite a bit of experimentation, I couldn't find any more characters. Though the computer had treated me to them quite a few times, I was unable to accomplish any Vendetta moves (even accidentally). I was becoming disheartened, because I had found out how to do Power Combos, Sudden Deaths, Overkills and Cinekills with regularity. Why could I not do Vendettas? On surfing the net I came across FAQ sheets written & compiled by Dave Woodall for the original ETERNAL CHAMPIONS (EC) for the Sega Genesis. Dave's work was superbly well done and absolutely thorough. I was impressed by his work and surprised that anyone had enjoyed the game as much as I had, since so many different video game magazines had given EC terrible reviews. Sometimes I feel that game reviewer's opinions are about as off-base as Roger Ebert's action movie reviews or Ralph Nader's car buying guides. (If you don't like a genre anyway why bother berating some of the best work available? Review the best and worst of what you like and leave the rest to others.) I contacted Dave to see if he had an updated FAQ covering EC:CDS and was informed that he had not played the new game and was waiting for the release of a version for Sega's SATURN system. Dave was able to direct me to an EC:CDS specific FAQ written by ye olde 'VaultKeeper'. I was very happy to find (finally!) VK's work and my ability to continue my search for hidden characters was helped tremendously. The VaultKeeper's FAQ listed all the Vendettas and the means by which to find Hidden Characters as well, but his FAQ also seemed to show some of the same bogus power move directions that are shown in the game manual. (Perhaps the manual and VK's FAQ were prepared using pre-release copies of the game - before the control and menu systems were finalized.) Anyway, inspired by those who tread this path before me, I decided to create a FAQ of my own to answer those Frequently Asked Questions that I am sure others are dealing with. If you are one of them, read on and enjoy. 2) CORRECTIONS/ADDITIONS TO GAME MANUAL A) GAME OPTIONS - There are quite a few inaccuracies in the game manual for Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side. This section will shed some light on them for you. On pages 10 and 15 of the game manual there is a screen shot of the Eternal Champions: CDS title screen with a list of options entitled 'Main Menu'. The choice at the bottom of this list is 'Game Options'. This choice has been removed from production copies of this game and replaced by 'Controller Setup'. Apparently, from the screen shot shown on page 22, 'Controller Setup' was originally part of the 'Game Options' menu for the entire game - a menu that would have allowed players to customize their gameplay in Tournament and Contest modes by setting Battle Time, Skill Level and Game Speed. I do not see why this Option screen was removed from the game. How hard could it have been to program the game to not show cinemas or allow hidden characters to appear unless a minimum fighting level were defeated? Perhaps someone felt it could potentially make the game too easy to play and Hidden Characters would be discovered sooner than expected. Even so, I feel it is a major omission from any fighting game that does not allow players to choose their own means of extending the playing life and enjoyability of the product they have purchased. It is incredible that a game that set the high water mark for customization in its initial release fails to allow this minimum standard in its sequel. Novice players should be able to play on the Slow speed setting and Advanced players should be able to test their skills on Overdrive in ALL play modes. If anyone knows how to restore this Option menu to the game please let me know. You may have noticed that when you play against the computer in Duel mode, the options menu does not show 'Inner Strength ON/OFF'. If you would like to play versus a computer controlled opponent with Inner Strength turned OFF: 1) ENTER DUEL at the MAIN MENU screen 2) Make sure you are set for a two-player game by following the instructions at the top of the screen 3) Now that both player icons are on the screen (one blue, one yellow), go to the OPTIONS menu 4) Set Inner Strength to 'OFF' and then EXIT OPTIONS 5) Choose EXIT DUEL 6) You can now ENTER DUEL again 7) Play against the computer and both you and your opponent will have unlimited Inner Strength! B) FIGHTING MOVES - The means to activate certain power moves (both Special and Skill) are not listed in the game manual. Some are listed incorrectly. Some are not described properly. Some are not mentioned at all (i.e. Vendetta moves for each character). Look here to see what's missing. BLADE Stun Beam (O__O) - This move is listed as B,F(Z) which is correct, but only for the Standing (high) Stun Beam. To fire a Low Stun Beam, press B,F (C). Personal Shield (O__O) - (X+Y+Z). This reduces damage if you are hit by any attack. That does not mean you are invincible though! If you are beaten to a pulp by several unblocked hits the shield will overload, implode and cause you an additional 20% damage or so. Tracking Blade (O__O) - B,F(X+Y). Though this projectile will track the movements of your opponent, if blocked it will return to sender! OUCH! Block it to send it back again. Projectile Containment Field (O__O) - (A+B). Utterly useless. A complete waste of Inner Strength. This only slows down enemy projectiles, you will probably still get hit. Brick Wall (O_O) - B,F(B). Blade dashes forward and bashes his opponent against the wall. This makes an excellent juggling move. Use it immediately after knocking someone down - especially someone you just swatted from the air. Excessive Force (O_O) - CB,F(B+C). Pound them into submission with this combo attack. The manual doesn't mention that all combo attacks that use this sequence must be charged or they won't work. Vendetta (O_O) - D,D,F,F(X). Blade punches his opponent into the air and against the wall, takes aim and incinerates them with a blast from his laser cannon. DAWSON Dual Knife Throw (O__O) - B,F(X). He throws two knives (duh). Spit Attack (O__O) - B,F(Y+Z). This will slow down speedy foes. Pony Tail Strike (O_O) - B,F(X+Y). This attack is actually a sidestep strike with the pony tail - unlike what's printed in the manual. Hat Trick (O_O) - B,F(Z). This attack is not mentioned at all in the manual. He throws his hat, it hits twice upon returning, like Jetta's Boomerang attack. Gold Strike (OO) - CB,F(B+C). Dawson goes for the gold with this 5-hit combo. Gentleman's Quarter (O_O) - D,U(B). Dawson removes his hat, kneels and whips his pony tail around and forward for a raking effect. Step Out (O__O) - D,DB,B(C). You must be standing at the extreme edge of the screen for this to work! Exit stage left, return stage right (or vice versa) and give Larcen a surprise if he throws one more %$#@ Sai! Vendetta (O__O) - B,D,F,B,B(Z). He pulls out a shotgun and blows the enemy away! JETTA Flying Choke Hold (O_O) - B,F(Z). Jetta throws her sleeve around the opponent's neck and well, uh, chokes them. CHEAT MODE ALERT - This will sometimes work from VERY far away! Resonate (O__O) - You must Phase first, then hold (A+C) momentarily. This is one of the dirtiest tricks in the game. Not only are you ultra, super fast, but with the slightest touch your opponent loses all control! Nasty! Ceiling Climb (O__O) - D,U(Y). She throws her boomerang, then climbs to the ceiling as it hits 3-4 times. She then dives from the ceiling with a powerful punch. It is possible to (accidentally) reflect the boomerang back to her, she dives immediately thereafter. Power Burst (O_O) - D,DF,F(C). Jetta creates a temporary shield by bringing her bracelets together, then spreading her arms wide. This prevents almost anyone from getting to her from anywhere. Ricochet (O__O) - D,U(A or C). Turn into a spinning and bouncing ball of death! Press (A) to go left and (C) to go right. Vendetta (O__O) - D,D,B,D(A). Concentrating on her stunned opponent, Jetta causes he/she to resonate beyond their own harmonic level until they explode into so much tomato paste. Jetta is the only character I have seen do her vendetta to an airborne opponent. LARCEN Low Sweep (O_O) - B,F(Z). Larcen wraps his grappling hook around an opponent's legs, or the air in front of them, or the air beneath them, or the air behind them and trips them. Cool. CHEAT MODE ALERT - Though human controlled players can only block this from a low defensive position, the computer regularly blocks it while standing. Remember, this can sometimes work from VERY far away! Low Down Dirty Shame (O_O) - D(A). Larcen does not have a crouching kick when using button (A), instead he grabs his grappling hook from his belt and uses it to attack his enemies down low. It removes power from enemies even if they block - a little at a time . Most characters can be trapped in a corner when Larcen does this to them because any action will result in their being knocked down. Unlike most other attacks, Larcen remains stationary when doing this and will not slide away from anyone he has trapped in the corner. Power Sweep (O__O) - Hold (A+B+C). Mostly useless. Larcen attaches his hook to the ceiling and swings feet first. You can use it to escape from a corner, but the computer will almost always combo attack you to death and beyond if you dare try. You can knock down an opponent on the other side of the room, but the computer almost always blocks this. Midknight will sometimes fall for it if you catch him doing a Manifest. Use it on stunned people you can't reach, or forget it and just throw a Sai or three instead. Air Sweep (OO) - (A+C). Larcen jumps back and throws his hook down and forward at the opponent. This also works from the air - but be careful! Reflect (O__O) - B,F(X). Reflects back most projectiles at twice their speed. Do not use this against Midknight, it will not reflect his Bedazzle Spell. If you are forced to block one of Slash's Declaw attacks, don't bother attempting to reflect the second - if he throws them in succession, you'll just get hit. You must reflect the first to reflect the second - it isn't quite so critical with his Fire and Ice projectiles. Ceiling Climb & Dive (O__O) - CD,U(C). Larcen crawls along the ceiling (left or right), then dismounts at an angle, attacking with claws and foot blades. Press (Z) to release. Backflip Kick (OO) - D,DB,B(C). This used to be much easier (okay, maybe too easy) to do, Larcen flips backward to deliver a bone-cracking kick. Horrendous for anyone attempting to jump into or over Larcen. Mantis Strike (O_O) - D,DF,F(A). Jumping forward, Larcen delivers a battering kung fu knee strike. This is basically the same as R.A.X.'s Atomic Knee attack, just with the (A) button instead of (B). Incorporate this into your combos - if you can. Vendetta (OO) - F,F,F,D(Z). Taking a long, slender dagger from an inside pocket, Larcen gets up close and personal, stabbing his opponent repeatedly. MIDKNIGHT Doom Dog (O_O) - D,DF,F (B). Transforming into a really big wolf, Midknight pounces! Ceiling Ram (OO) - D,DF,F(C). This attack does 10% damage but does not stun your foe as the manual says. Life Drain (OO) - CB,F(X+Y+Z). You can drain the life energy from your enemy even if you have not lost any power, but this does not give you a surplus. Use this on stunned or Bedazzled foes. Flying Wall Smash (O__O) - B,F(Z). 'Nuff Sed. Mist Attack (O__O) - Hold (A+C) briefly. Where'd he go? OW! That hurts! Manifest (O__O) - Hold (A+B+C) briefly. This supposedly reduces damage from enemies - for one whole attack. Wow. Shoulder Roll/Side Kick (OO) - D,DF,F(Z). Midknight rolls up and over to deliver a blow to the back of an enemy's head which will be blocked and immediately countered. Overhead Stomach Punch (OO) - F(A+B+C). Knock your opponent into next Tuesday. Vendetta (O_O) - D,F,F,D(B). Midknight lifts his stunned foe into the air with one hand - just as you think he is going to punch them into the ionosphere, Midknight instead slams them into the ground and with overwhelming energy disintegrates their body on the spot. RAMSES III Sun Reflection (O__O) - B,F(Z). Summoning the power of the sun, Ramses unleashes a concentrated laser beam on his enemies. When playing on Overdrive speed setting, Ramses stores it to be released on demand. Press D(C) for a ground level laser beam. Press B(Z) for a mid-level beam. Press F(Y) for an overhead beam. These attacks can also be released in the air or as part of a combo. Practice! Snake Attack (O__O) - D,U(C). Ramses morphs into a great serpent, dives underground and delivers a sneak attack to his opponent from underneath. Torch Attack (O__O) - D,U(Y). Ramses transforms into living fire, rolling across the scene and scorching his enemies. CHEAT MODE ALERT - This strikes human controlled players twice (going and coming), it only strikes the computer once. Hack & Smack (OO) - B,F(X+Y). Ramses wields his Blade and Flail in a 4-hit combo. Phoenix Dive (O__O) - In the air D,DF,F(Z). Fused with the spirit of this legendary firebird, Ramses dives at the enemy. This move does not require inner strength to work, master it and you'll destroy all enemies. The computer always jumps up and back (UB) before doing this attack, you may also do it by jumping straight up (U) or forward (UF) first, instead. King Combo (O_O) - CB,F(B+C). A powerful 5-strike attack. Vendetta (O_O) - D,D,D,F,F(B). Ramses transforms into a gigantic scarab and devours his unworthy opponent in a bloodthirsty feast. RAVEN Create Void (O__O) - D,DF,F(Z). Raven summons a temporary black hole that sucks in opponents, damaging them until it disappears. The game will not let you gain an unfair advantage by retreating or advancing while your opponent is in the void. You will not be able to move until the attack is complete. Time Split (O__O) - B,F(Y+Z). Via her hourglass, Raven teleports around the field several times, escaping damage and committing sneak attacks. Control re-appearance by pressing (A), (B) or (C). Destabilize Time (O__O) - Hold (X+Y+Z). Raven's hourglass slows everything around her, including her opponents. Raven's Fury (O_O) - In the air, D,DB,B(B). In the spirit of her namesake, Raven does a rolling 3-hit dive at the enemy from the air. Mambo Combo (O_O) - CB,F(B+C). A 5-strike kicking attack. Vendetta (O__O) - D,F,B,F(Y). Raven tosses her hourglass at a stunned, defeated foe, drawing out their life energy and causes them to expire of advanced age. R.A.X. Lock and Load (O__O) - Hold (A+B). R.A.X. locks-on to his opponent, then fires an energy bolt. Don't wait for a full tone-lock, as soon as the targeting system begins to sound, press any button to release the plasma ball and then attack your stunned opponent. Air Jets (O_O) - D,U(B). R.A.X. ignites his jump jets and hovers off the ground for a short time. Cyber Kick (O_O) - (A+B+C). In a move similar to the cyber punch, R.A.X. overloads his leg to deliver a devastating kick. Shockwave (O_O) - B,F(Y+Z). R.A.X. summons a blast of electricity, then slams down his fist, sending a shockwave across the ground. Jet Uppercut (O_O) - D,U(Z). Igniting his jet boots, R.A.X. delivers a cyber-powered uppercut to airborne foes. Turbine (O__O) - B,F(A). This neutralizes the effects of enemy projectiles and allows R.A.X. to escape when cornered. Vendetta (O_O) - F,B,F,B(B). Similar to his Cyber Punch, R.A.X. overloads his arm and burns his opponent to a crispy cinder. RIPTIDE Thunder Clap (OO) - D,DF,F(C). Riptide stuns her enemies by roughly clapping them on the ears. Whirlwind Teleport (O__O) - D,U(C). Riptide disappears and reappears in a cyclone of wind. Fog Trap (O__O) - D,DB,B(Y). Riptide calls a dense fog and send it toward her opponent's feet. Air Kriss Blade (O_O) - B,F(C or Y). From the air, Riptide throws a dagger across (C) or down (Y) at an angle. Whirlpool Reflect (O__O) - B,F(A). Riptide morphs into a living whirlpool that catches and reflects projectiles. Tidal Punch (O_O) - D,DF,F(X). With her punch, Riptide summons the force of a crashing wave. Vendetta (O_O) - F,D,B,B(B). Riptide blows a deadly kiss that quick-freezes her opponent to the core--only the bloody, broken heart shows sign of life's passage. SHADOW Smoke Screen (O__O) - (A+B+C). Shadow disappears and reappears in different areas of the scene. (A+B)=Warp to left floor. (B+C)=Warp to right floor. (X+Y)=Warp to left ceiling. (Y+Z)=Warp to right ceiling. If no direction combos are used, Shadow materializes next to her opponent. Shadow Mode (O__O) - Hold (X+Y+Z). Shadow becomes a "shadow" and attacks without fear of injury. This effect lasts 5 seconds. You cannot use projectile attacks when in Shadow Mode! Flying Mine Uzume-Bi (O__O) - D,DF,F(Z). Shadow throws an auto-locking mine that tags then explodes on an opponent. Ninja Knife (O_O) - CB,UF(X or Y). Shadow throws a knife up and forward (UF). (X)=Slow and (Y)=Fast. Ninja Shuriken (O__O) - B,F(X or Y). Shadow throws shuriken toward her foes. (X)=Slow and (Y)=Fast. Ninja Smoke Bomb (O__O) - CB,DF(X or Y). Shadow drops a smoke bomb that rolls across the floor. (X)=Short and (Y)=Long. Flying Step Tobi Ashi (O__O) - CB,F(A+B). Shadow executes a high-speed sweep/slide. Banzai Blitz (OO) - CB,F(B+C). A 5-strike blitz attack. Vendetta (OO) - D,D,B,D(C). Shadow takes out a katana and slashes, then impales her opponent. SLASH Fire Club (O__O) - D,DF,F(X). Slash shoots a stream of fire from his club. Ice Club (O__O) - D,DF,F(Y). Slash freezes his enemies with a spray of ice from his club. Spinal Crush (OO) - F(Y). Slash grabs onto the opponent's waist with his feet and pounds the enemy's head with his club. Double Foot Kick (O_O) - D,DB,B(C). Slash does a back flip while rapidly attacking with his feet. Club Dive (O__O) - D,DB,B(B). Slash leaps at and over his enemies, beating them as he passes. Vendetta (O_O) - D,F,D,F(C). Slash knocks his enemy's head clean off. TRIDENT Wavemaster (O__O) - D,U(A or C). Trident disappears in a huge wave, dissolves into the ground and then reappears somewhere else. (A)=Teleport Left and (C)=Teleport Right. You CANNOT teleport to the center by pressing (B) as stated in the manual. Repulser Field (O__O) - (B+C). Trident is surrounded by a yellow aura that pushes his opponents away. Bio-Drain Field (OO) - (Y+Z). Trident is surrounded by a red aura, if Trident strikes his opponent while it is on, that opponent will only be able to do 50% of their normal damage with any attack. Depth Charge Field (OO) - (X+Y). Trident is surrounded by a blue aura, if Trident strikes a foe while it is on, that foe will move as though underwater. Liquid Mode (O__O) - (A+B+C). Trident transforms into water and passes through solid objects. Use this move to escape from corners or avoid projectile attacks. Tidal Wave (O__O) - D,DF,F(Z). Trident summons a wave form the depths of Atlantis, then hurls it forward. Slash Spin (O_O) - D,DF,F(A or C). Trident curls into a ball and rolls forward (C) or backward (A), trident extended. Vendetta (O_O) - F,F,D,F(A). Trident sinks the claws of his namesake weapon-hand deep into the chest of his enemy, right through the heart. Then, in celebration, he strikes a victory pose, his enemy held high overhead, spinning in a whirlwind of death. XAVIER Phantom Strike (O__O) - (Y+Z). Xavier thrusts his cane through a dimensional portal, stabbing the opponent. Definitely NOT (X+Y) as stated in the game manual. Swap Spell (O__O) - (X+Y). Xavier switches places with the opponent. This spell effectively makes opponents get hit by their own projectiles. Possession (O__O) - (X+Y+Z). Characters switch bodies for a short time, but still damage each others 'soul' when hitting their own bodies. Confusion Spell (O__O) - (A+C). Xavier places the opponent in a state of confusion, scrambling the opponents controls for 5 seconds. Mystic Shield (O__O) - B,F(Y+Z). Xavier reflects missile attacks with his magical cane. Snap Back (O_O) - B,F(X). Xavier strikes from a distance by extending the end of his cane to twice its normal length. Dragon's Bite (OO) - D,DF,F(C). Xavier delivers a nasty uppercut with his cane. Vendetta (O__O) - D,D,B,B(C). Xavier casts a shrinking spell on his opponent, then walks over and squashes the micronian under foot. 3) HOW TO FIND HIDDEN CHARACTERS CRISPY, BLAST, and CHIN WO - In Contest Mode, play 100 matches to find Crispy, 200 to find Blast and 300 to find Chin Wo. ETERNAL CHAMPION - I won Contest Mode with every character on Neophyte and all but Slash and R.A.X. on Warrior before he showed up (try defeating Warrior level once with RAVEN or Champion level twice with BLAST). You can not use him in Contest or Tournament Modes, only in Duel Mode. Two portraits appear for the ETERNAL, the lower one has a blue background and faces left, this is the First Tier ETERNAL who commands Dragon, Hawk, Shark and Tiger fighting styles. The upper one has a red background and faces right, this is the Second Tier ETERNAL who commands the Unicorn, Elephant, Millipede and Electric Eel Fighting styles. If you play against the computer controlled ETERNAL in Duel Mode, he will NOT change to any of his different fighting styles. Instead, he will maintain his original form, phasing to become immaterial and exploding energy balls when airborne. DARK CHAMPION - Playing in Contest Mode on Champion level, devastate every opponent with a Vendetta or Cinekill in each winning round (not easy, but NOT impossible). Do not continue, do not turn back, do not cry and do not lose. You can not use him in Contest or Tournament Modes, only in Duel Mode. When playing against a computer controlled DARK CHAMPION in Duel Mode, he will only fight using his first style and will NOT switch to his other styles. HOOTER - In Single Player Tournament Mode, select the Double Elimination Tournament (do NOT change the number of CPU players). Lose to your first opponent, then win every match thereafter. Hooter will be at the Player Select screen when you are successful. SENATOR - Let the time run out in the winning round against every character you defeat in Contest Mode on Neophyte level. The Senator will then take office on the Player Select screen. SLITHER - In Single Player Tournament Mode, select the Dominator Tournament. Set Match Condition to 3 out of 5. Set the Characters Per Player to 13. Set the Win Condition to 9 Win Domination. Slither will be available when you win the tournament under these conditions (make sure you pick characters you are very good at using, the computer will do its best to kill you). THANATOS - If you can kill off Xavier in Contest Mode on Champion level using a Vendetta, you'll receive Thanatos as a new character. YAPPY - In Single Player Tournament Mode, choose Expert Survivor. If you can defeat at least 8-10 characters and score in excess of 300 points each time, you should find him waiting happily at your Player Select Screen (best bet, kill everyone with a Vendetta for an easy extra 150 points per round). ZUNI - Once you have found Chin Wo, use Controller One to ENTER DUEL mode and go to the OPTIONS menu. Once there, set the number of rounds to '1 of 1' and the background STAGE to 'PLAYER 2'. Return to DUEL mode, choose your own character, then play against Chin Wo. Keep playing until you can defeat Chin Wo with a Sudden Death. When you do, Zuni will appear at the Player Select screen. 4) SPECIAL/SKILL MOVES LIST, STARTING CHARACTERS Name: JONATHAN BLADE Occupation: BOUNTY HUNTER - 2030 AD Fighting Style: KENPO Defining Quote: "If you're coming on, come on!" If your opponent lands on the right side, their head must be on the right side of the screen. If your opponent lands on the left side, their head must be on the left side of the screen. Effect - Ghostly wraiths appear, lift the defeated opponent from the ground and consume them body and soul on the spot. SUDDEN DEATH Landing Position - The Loser must land just to the right of the torch on the left side of the screen with their head on the right. Effect - The golden jackal statue will come to life and devour the unfortunate loser. BELLGRAVE SQUARE LABORATORIES, 2100 AD RESIDENT(S) - Midknight OVERKILL Landing Position - The loser must land directly underneath the electical discharge on the right side of the chamber. If your opponent comes to rest with his or her head on the right, and their feet just touching the light from the chamber you should have it. Effect - A pit opens in the floor, dropping the unfortunate loser into a nightmarish deathtrap. SUDDEN DEATH Landing Position - The loser must be struck with the final blow while standing underneath either flashing red sign. This works best if the loser is hit toward the center, but can work the other way occasionally. Effect - They are transported into the chamber at the center of the room where they are eradicated. BLACK ORCHID ROOFTOP, 1993 AD RESIDENT(S) - Shadow OVERKILL Landing Position - The Loser must be knocked toward the second letter from the left. Effect - Loser will fly into the letter, be electrocuted with lots of blood, explode, and drop an eyeball onto the ground. SUDDEN DEATH Landing Position - The loser must land just to the left of the next to last letter, with their head on the left. Effect - A large reptile on its evening constitutional through Tokyo strolls by and inadvertently steps on your defeated foe, squashing them. BLUE DRAGON CIRCUS, 1899 AD RESIDENT(S) - Jetta and Zuni OVERKILL Landing Position - The Loser must land with their head hanging off the far left side of the screen, or be knocked off-screen when standing there. Effect - The looser is knocked off-screen through the door of a lion's cage. The wheels of the circus cage collapse, there are signs of a struggle as the the lion devours his new-found prey and an arterial spray of blood forms a flowing river on the ground. SUDDEN DEATH Landing Position - The losing opponent must land or die just to the right of the steps in the background at the far right of the stage with their head on the right. Effect - The screen pans to the open doorway, you see a cannon roll out and fire, the screen pans back to the right so that you can see the starry night sky, and a VW convertible loaded with clowns lands on the body of the loser squashing it. Finally, one of the clowns blows the squeeze horn on the car and blood comes splashin out. CHICAGO THEATER, 1920 AD RESIDENT(S) - Larcen OVERKILL Landing Position - The Loser must land a touch to the left or right of the ticket booth. Effect - The Loser gets gunned down by a passing car, then again left to right, while blood flies out of the loser everytime the bullet trail hits the loser. SUDDEN DEATH Landing Position - The loser should land directly under the street lamp on the right of the stage, with their head on the left. This is easiest to do if you are standing in front of the car next to the right edge of the building (in front of the left headlamp) and you punch your opponent toward the center of the stage. Effect - The scene pans so that you see the ticket lady stop doing her nails, pick up a .45 calibre automatic, break the glass to her booth with it, and fire a couple rounds into the prone body of the loser. But that's not all, in the tradition of a true assassin, she confirms her kill by putting away the .45, grabbing her double barrel shotgun as she climbs out of the booth, taking aim and firing both barrels to decapitate a very dead mark. CYBER-DOME, 2345 AD RESIDENT(S) - R.A.X. OVERKILL Landing Position - The loser must land just to the right of the dragon statue in the center of the stage. Effect - Some UFO robots fly onto the scene, freezing the enemy and then obliterating the loser-sicle. Then a vacuum robot cleans up the melted metallic bits leaving the organic remains. SUDDEN DEATH Landing Position - Standing at the edge of the pool of light from the spotlights that is near the center of the stage, punch kick or throw the enemy toward either end of the stage. Effect - The loser is impaled on the horn of the statue. GREAT RIFT VALLEY, 50000 BC RESIDENT(S) - Slash OVERKILL Landing Position - The loser must land with the head or upper torso of their body hanging off the far left side of the background. Effect - The loser gets dragged off-screen by a dinosaur that you can't see (yet). The dinosaur then moves on-screen while chewing happily on the loser. Finally, blood and bones a trademark item is spit out of his mouth. SUDDEN DEATH Landing Position - Directly underneath the volcano on the left. Effect - A pteradactyl swoops down from the heavens, picks up the broken body of the loser, takes flight high into the sky, goes to the horizon and drops the body into the volcano. Just then the volcano erupts and the singed skeleton (still screaming somehow) explodes toward the screen. HANGTOWN MINE, 1849 AD RESIDENT(S) - Dawson and Slither OVERKILL Landing Position - The loser must land at the far right end of the stage with their head on the right. Effect - They stand up dazed and cannot come to their senses. The mining bed continues to roll down the mineshaft until it comes to a dead end where the defeated meet their death by being impaled on a large wooden beam. SUDDEN DEATH Landing Position - Loser must land on the left of the Third bed with their head on the left - right at or over the joint. Effect - The mining bed grinds to a halt as a cave-in or earthquake dislodges a gigantic boulder which falls from above squashing the loser and splattering his blood on the wall. OFF THE BARBARY COAST, 1566 AD RESIDENT(S) - Riptide OVERKILL Landing Position - The loser must be defeated while standing directly in the center of the stage. It takes a bit experimentation to do this - if the opponent is on the left of the screen, but standing at the center of the stage, and you are on the far right, a projectile attack may do the trick. You may also try an attack from the air on someone who is standing there. This is one of the harder deaths to accomplish during combat. Effect - A hook is knocked loose from its moorings above and impales the loser as they swing in the wind. SUDDEN DEATH Landing Position - The loser must be defeated while standing in the corner at the far left of the stage. Effect - The loser is knocked overboard where they are eaten by a very ravenous shark. SALEM, 1699 AD RESIDENT(S) - Hooter, Thanatos and Xavier OVERKILL Landing Position - The Loser must land centered in the fire. Effect - The loser will be slowly burned to death, arms flailing, leaving behind a skeleton. The skull breaths a last gasp of super-heated air then falls to the ground. SUDDEN DEATH Landing Position - The loser must be struck with the winning blow as they stand or land in front (or slightly to the right of) the tree on the far left of the stage. You can throw an opponent toward the left side and if they land between the owl on the roof and the tree, you should get it. The loser's head must be on the left when they land. Effect - A flashing bolt of brilliant lightning instantly charbroils both the loser and the owl on the roof. Feathers from the owl float gently to the ground as the loser's heart beats without cause in their rib cage, an arterial spray coating the ground with crimson. SHENGO VILLAGE, Trinidad, 1802 AD RESIDENT(S) - Raven OVERKILL Landing Position - Between the skull-furnace and the torch on the right side of the stage. This varies a lot depending upon character matchups. Some characters can be standing at the skulls on the ground at the far right of the stage and throw their opponent to the left. Some characters can be standing just to the left of large skull-furnace and throw their opponent to the right. Still others can punch or kick an opponent who is standing just to the right of the mouth to the skull-furnace toward the right. Effect - The loser is knocked into the large cauldron in the background. They try feebly to climb out, but their flessh is consumed as the pot boils over. SUDDEN DEATH Landing Position - Loser must be standing in the center of the totem on the left side of the stage and be hit toward the left. Effect - The loser is transported into the skull-furnace at the center of the stage, where their body is burned in a hellish, flaming fury. SHORES OF ATLANTIS, 110 BC RESIDENT(S) - Trident OVERKILL Landing Position - The loser must land directly below either statue in the background. It has also been seen in front of the big rock located on the left side of the area, and centered in front of the sky city in the background. This Overkill like the one on Riptide's stage can be very difficult to accomplish at times. Effect - Three vines slowly wrap the loser up, then pull him/her under. A big series of splashes, followed by bubbles, lead up to a pool of blood where the loser fell. SUDDEN DEATH Landing Position - Loser must land or be defeated in front of the small rock on the left side of the stage. If the loser is standing there, hit them toward the left. Effect - The loser is impaled by several wickedly spined fish who leap from the water to attack, the last one munches on the skull. SONG HONG DELTA, 1955 AD RESIDENT(S) - Blast, Crispy and the Eternals OVERKILL Landing Position - The loser must land in the clearing of dried grass at the center of the stage. Effect - The helicopter will launch a missile at the loser, blowing him up and leaving charcoal briquettes behind. SUDDEN DEATH Landing Position - The loser must land just to the left of the tower on the right side of the stage. The loser's head must be on the left and his feet should be at or near some pebbles to the left of the tower. Effect - A sniper armed with a fifty-cal pops up from his hiding place in the tower and rivets the loser's body with bullets until their flesh comes off the bone. STONE MONKEY TEMPLE, 1815 AD RESIDENT(S) - Chin Wo OVERKILL Landing Position - The loser should land at the center of the stage, directly beneath the sun after being thrown toward the left from the right side of the archway. Effect - The dragons who guard the gate of the temple come to life and in the blink of an eye the loser is eaten. SUDDEN DEATH Landing Position - The loser should be standing just inside the gate on either side and be struck toward the center of the stage. Effect - The stone monkeys overhead come to life and attack, tearing the loser to shreds. SYRIAN DESERT REFINERY, 2030 AD RESIDENT(S) - Blade OVERKILL Landing Position - The Loser must land centered at the bottom of the huge fan. Effect - Loser gets sucked into the fan, sliced up, splattering blood all over the walls and floor. SUDDEN DEATH Landing Position - Have the loser must land under the second metal band to the left of the fan with their head on the left. I have seen this done with the loser's head on the right, but not too often. Effect - There is a leak in the refinery's workings and toxic waste spill directly on top of the loser from the pipeworks above. The toxic chemicals dissolve the loser completely in a green pool of death. WASHINGTON, DC, 1995 AD RESIDENT(S) - Senator and Yappy OVERKILL Landing Position - The loser must expire in the far right corner of the stage. Effect - In the distance, the top of the Capitol Building swings wide, exposing a missile silo, a missile lands of its target ground-zero-loser and you see a painting on the side proclaiming 'Big Bertha Sends Sweet Dreams' in the split-second before the nuclear warheads go off. SUDDEN DEATH Landing Position - The victim of this unfortunate death must land on the right manhole cover. Effect - The manhole explodes, sending the loser skyward toward the Washington Memorial where they are impaled on its peak. 8) ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Kim 'Killer' Terry - Many thanks for letting me use your computer and e-mail address. His Napalm Express attack instantly dizzies opponents, leaving them prime targets for his Vendetta move. If you have an SG PROPAD 2 (from STD) or similar programmable controller, try mapping the (X+Y) buttons to a single paddle button (R or L). This will make it much easier to activate his Napalm Express until you become used to pressing two buttons at once. Since other characters also have special moves that require two or more button presses after a specific joystick motion, you might find that a similar technique will work for them as well. If you have a Sega CD Backup Ram Cartridge, save an extra copy of your EC:CDS info file on it. This way you will still have a copy of it in case it is ever accidentally erased. You can also save to your cartridge, erase the Sega CD internal memory and then experiment to confirm the means to find specific hidden characters. It is a shame that the cartridge memory is not supported from within EC:CDS, that would have made it much easier to make file transfers. Generally speaking, in order to activate any of the special kills or deaths you must be in the round of battle which will cause you to win (or lose) the match and then fulfill a certain set of specific requirements. Both Overkills and Sudden Deaths are background related kills, that means that any character can do them, so it is a good idea to learn them all if you can. You must learn the capabilities of your character, because not all of them execute throws the same way or the same distance. Keep this in mind, because the effect of your attacks varies depending upon the character matchups and you may have to make adjustments. It is impossible to perform any special kills on any Animals or Eternals no matter how hard you try so don't bother. Overkills require that a defeated foe is unconcious - with no vitality left and then land prone on a particular spot on the ground or be knocked unconcious by a punch, kick or throw from a particular spot in a particular direction. Overkills only work if your last hit does more than 5% damage. When in doubt, use a throw or projectile attack. Sudden Deaths are just that, your foe will be going along just fine until one punch, kick or throw activates the kill - all remaining strength is drained at once and your opponent is killed off by the background. Sudden Deaths do not require that your enemy be unconscious or dizzy, but do require that they have 33% (1/3) power or less, be standing (or land) in a particular place and the victor hits with a move that does at least 10% damage. When in doubt, use a throw or projectile attack. Cinekills can be activated if you perform a Power Combo when you are in the final round and then dizzy your opponent with less than 1/4 of their power remaining - usually the Eternal Champion's Bushido Symbol must still be visible, but not always. Even when you feel you have met all requirements, the Dark Champion is sometimes rather picky about whom he will take to their death. I have seen Cinekills activated when an opponent had as much as 35% to 40% power - but not too often. Cinekills can only be performed against the Starting 13 Characters. In order to activate a Vendetta move you must be in the final round and your opponent must be dizzy and have 1/4 to 1/3 power or less. Make sure you are standing the proper distance from your opponent or the Vendetta will not work. For some reason all hidden character's Vendettas must be activated from the right (that is, opponent on the left), even though the computer can do them to you from either side. Some characters can perform their Vendetta moves when the opponent's gauge is as high as 1/3 (maybe a little more) while others are rather reluctant to do so if the enemy's gauge is above 1/4. Be aware of the abilities of the character you are using. Most Power Combos or Dizzy Combos will work more effectively when you play on Overdrive, but with practice all of them can be executed on the Normal speed setting as well. Experiment! These characters are very flexible, so there are many different ways to combine their attacks for maximum damage. Don't forget that some attacks listed as SKILL MOVES still use or require that you have inner strength before they can be activated, most do not. The Eternity Complex and The Cimmerian Complex (respective homes of the Eternal Champion and Dark Champion) are not available in Duel Mode. It could be that they are not available because there are no Overkills or Sudden Deaths on those levels. If anyone finds out how to access those levels in Duel Mode, please let me know. 10) CONCLUSION I truly believe that a large portion of the criticism of EC:CDS by others has been because it is a game that originated on a 16-bit platform system rather than being a port of a game that originated in the arcades (criticism that continues with a game called Weapon Lord - I have not played it yet). I also believe that certain publications would have rated EC:CDS MUCH higher had it been released by Nintendo for the SNES. Criticism would have been muted to the point of non-existence had either of those parameters been met. This is pure speculation, true; but that is the way I see it. Well, that just about does it. Please realize that I wrote this FAQ because I really enjoy playing this game. Again, I do not think it is fair to write about games that you do not like. Otherwise I could have easily written page after page about the Art of Fighting, Mortal Kombat and World Heroes series of fighting games. That would not have been fair because though those games frustrate me to hell and back other people find them to be very enjoyable and challenging - to each his own. Those games are very well done and have a lot to offer for the people brave enough to make a viable effort toward learning them. As you have seen, I still have problems with EC:CDS but have been able to overcome its shortcomings. Isn't that the point after all? For my efforts I have been rewarded with many hours of enjoyable gameplay. Until the Senator gives your money back, RED RONIN, The Cybernetic Samurai P.S. If anyone would like to offer me a job writing about or testing games I would gladly send you my resume.
